Discover Sailing Day

The Discover Sailing Day takes place every year. It used to be on only one weekend in November but now it happens at various times throughout the year.

..........You can go for a free sail at any of over 30 yacht clubs.........

.........They're all over Victoria.........

.........Most are round Port Phillip Bay but there are clubs in Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Cowes and other far flung places..........

.........some at places I’ve not yet heard of!

I went for a sail on a dinghy in Mordialloc the first year I arrived in Australia and even managed to persuade my sister-in-law to get in a dinghy at Parkdale.........

..........The fact that it was being skippered by an eight or nine year old concerned her slightly but she got back without getting wet!..........

.........Since then I’ve had sailing lessons at Mordialloc and Albert Park Lake which were great fun.........

.........but I don't really get too much time to do things like that these days with two kids to keep amused now.

The clubs are happy to take almost anyone, from age 5 (subject to the parents jumping in a boat with them) up to 85 or possibly more if you're fit and able!!...........

.........Apparently there are loads of 70+ year old sailors out there so age isn't an issue.

You also don’t need any special equipment as the clubs will provide everything you'll need. Your own sunhat would be a good idea though!

It’s not just small sailing boats that you can go on either........

........There are clubs with ocean going keelboats..........

..........I'll probably try a keelboat trip this year.

I must get some better photos for this page but last weekend it was blowing a gale and there wasn't much opportunity to get any good shots..........

.........I did get photos of a blown over boat and one where a boat is being walked back to the clubhouse along the beach as the mast had been bent but thought these photos might put you off going!!

The main Discover Sailing Day is normally around late October/beginning of November between 10am and 3pm but as I said before, there are also other days now throughout the year when you can do it..........
